10 août 2026 · 20:08

Dive into the heart of Marrakech's vibrant life at Jemaa El-Fna, a UNESCO-listed square that comes alive day and night.

Jemaa El-Fna Square

Jemaa el-Fna is one of Marrakech's most iconic places. Located at the entrance to the souks and in the heart of the Medina, the square is an essential stop for experiencing the atmosphere of the city.

Its character changes throughout the day. Quieter in the morning, the square gradually becomes busier before coming fully to life in the late afternoon and evening.

Why visit Jemaa el-Fna?

Jemaa el-Fna is much more than simply a city square.

It is a meeting place and a major crossroads around which much of the Medina can be explored.

From the square, you can easily continue into Marrakech Medina and the souks or reach several historic landmarks.

Even if you cross Jemaa el-Fna several times during your stay, the atmosphere may feel completely different depending on the time of day.

Jemaa el-Fna during the day

During the day, Jemaa el-Fna is an excellent starting point for exploring Marrakech's historic centre.

Take time to observe the surrounding architecture, head into the souks or simply stop for a while on one of the nearby terraces.

The square is very open, so remember to consider the sun and heat during warmer periods.

Jemaa el-Fna in the evening

From late afternoon, the atmosphere gradually begins to change.

The square becomes increasingly lively and attracts both visitors and residents. As evening arrives, the activity continues and Jemaa el-Fna takes on a very different character from the morning.

If your itinerary allows, visiting once during the day and returning in the evening is a good way to experience both sides of the square.

See the square from a rooftop terrace

The terraces around Jemaa el-Fna offer an opportunity to see the square from above.

Late afternoon is particularly popular for enjoying the changing light over Marrakech and watching the square gradually become busier.

Well-positioned terraces can be popular around sunset, so allow some extra time if you want to find a place to sit.

Jemaa el-Fna and the Koutoubia

Close to the square stands the Koutoubia, whose minaret is one of Marrakech's most recognisable landmarks.

The two places can easily be explored during the same walk.

Their proximity allows you to combine the energy of Jemaa el-Fna with one of the city's most important architectural landmarks.

Explore the souks from Jemaa el-Fna

Jemaa el-Fna is also one of the main gateways into Marrakech's souks.

Leaving the square, you can quickly find yourself among narrow streets filled with shops, craftspeople, markets and different areas of the Medina.

There is no need to follow the most direct route at all times. Exploring the streets is part of the experience, while keeping your return route in mind.
